Monitoring Temperature And Humidity Inside The Server Rack

The increased utilization of blade servers has caused the control of heat and humidity in the server racks to become much more critical than previously. These units increase the density of the equipment in each rack and therefore the heat generated. Alarms are necessary at the rack level because a single server overheating will not raise the ambient room temperature enough to set off the room alarm sensors. These rack alarms can provide early problem warning and prevent server damage and the associated network problems in a timely fashion.

These alarms can be at the rack, or by email, or by SNMP traps, or by all three methods depending on the system. There are several different types of sensor systems from several different manufacturers, available at present. One of them is a compact environmental monitor with one onboard temperature sensor and in addition the ability to support up to 16 remote sensors. The system is very small so you don't have to change your system. If you receive a problem alert, you are able to identify the rack and power strip having the trouble, and turn off the individual outlet or reboot it.

Another power management and control system available is able to track temperature, humidity, airflow, and water at various locations from 15 to 100 feet away. This system needs only limited rack space and can control individual power receptacles. Another system on the market utilizes two sensor probes in each rack, one in front, one in back, to better measure the environment in the rack. This gives you a thermographic view of the temperature range in the rack and can be displayed in color for all the different racks in the computer center. This information can be used to determine the size and location of any additional A.C. or fans or blowers needed to correct a cooling system. It can also assist in the rearrangement, if necessary, of the rack layout and separation of a cold aisle/hot aisle system or any rack system, or when additional racks are added to a functioning system.

The control of heat generation and temperature in the data center continues to be one of the most critical areas. The monitoring of the environment has gone from the room, to the zone, to inside the individual server rack to give a much more precise picture of what is happening and allow better response to emergency conditions.

The Importance of Humidity Inside of Your House

Humidity is the concentration of water in the air. This is very important to consider even when inside the home. You should monitor the levels of humidity in your home to keep them from getting too high or too low. Now that many people spend more and more of their time indoors, it is important that the conditions indoors are healthy.

What are the risks? If you would like to avoid mold/mildew, fungi, viruses, dust mites, harmful bacteria, termites and carpet ants, then you should monitor the level of humidity in you home. All of these things breed in moist, humid conditions. A runny nose, itchy eyes, increased chemical sensitivity, throat irritation and headaches can result from the development of these things because of high humidity and dampness, or low humidity and dryness inside of a home. High humidity in the home can make it more difficult to breath, which can cause fatigue. Low humidity is bad for your eyes and skin.

If you have wooden structures in your home, they can be damaged by expanding or contracting with the changes in moister in the surrounding air. Furniture can crack, weaken and develop mildew if not kept at the right humidity. When this happens, a poor smell can develop if not taken care of. You don't really want small green organisms taking over in your living room, do you?

If you have high levels of humidity in your home, you might want to consider purchasing a dehumidifier to reduce the dampness of the air. Higher levels of humidity are likely in the summer months. You should plan to buy a humidity sensor to find out and keep track of what the humidity level in your home is. An air conditioner may assist you in balancing the humidity in the air during the summer. Lower levels of humidity are likely in the winter. Since this can also affect your health and cause dry skin and throat irritation, you should consider using a humidifier to raise the humidity to a healthy level.

Whether you live in an apartment or a house, you should get a humidity sensor, an air conditioner and humidifier. To keep you and your family comfortable and healthy, you should take the proper precautions to insure that the humidity levels are not extremely high and not extremely low. This will also protect your furniture. This is just a word to the wise, since you will probably spend most of your time indoors, if you are like most people nowadays.

Sensing Inside a Greenhouse Through Wireless Sensor Networks - An Emerging Technology

What is a Wireless Sensor Network?

A Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) consists of several distributed wireless sensor nodes that sense vibration, noise, and temperature. Each node has its own memory, battery, a processor and a sensor and is autonomous. These nodes are reliable, heterogeneous, scalable, fault tolerant and they require less power consumption.

In today's world WSN are used everywhere say in traffic controlling systems, in forests to detect fire, in green houses to monitor plants, in military to monitor spy activities, in houses to monitor water and waste water, in smart houses and in many more places. WSN has become an essential technology to live with.

WSN in Greenhouse monitoring:

A greenhouse is a place where plants are grown. To set up WSN in a greenhouse the nodes are placed on leaves and crops. The base node is responsible for collecting data from all nodes and communicating with the main server or computer.

For whom?

WSN for greenhouse monitoring is required for the greenhouse owner who wants maximum cultivation of crops in any environmental conditions.

The WSN nodes sense following:

Temperature
Level of Carbon Dioxide
Light
Humidity
Radiation

Monitoring these environmental factors continuously helps to gather information about the crops and plants in the greenhouse. Information collected is further manipulated to manage productivity of crops. Whenever there is a change rather than expected, i.e. temperature increase or decreases suddenly, the manager is notified about the condition of affected area using text message, or call or e-mail or any other thing like buzzer by the data communication system. Manager then takes action accordingly.

WSN nodes communicate with each other and share important data that will be useful for network. Network topology used for such networks depends on total area of the greenhouse, cost and other factors.

Data stored using sensor nodes on the computer is then manipulated and meaningful interpretation is obtained using data mining, knowledge management methods.

It provides faster deployment, installment flexibility for sensors, and better sturdiness than wired networks.

Conclusion:

A Wireless Sensor Network is a measurement tool. WSN applied in greenhouse evaluates and maintains growth of crops. It saves cost and energy of wiring and connecting all nodes. It only costs to set up and maintain the network. It is very convenient to handle greenhouse in real-time more efficiently. It is better to use such technology rather than wasting money in poor estimations and labor that is typical faced during crop cultivation.

Mist Fountains - Expert Guide on How a Mist Fountain Works From The Inside Out

The moisture contained within the air that we breathe day to day must be given importance. Heating and air conditioning equipment creates air dryness in our indoors. This dry air can cause some ailments to family members like dry scaly skin that's itchy and unsightly, chapping lips and some respiratory concerns like sinus and bronchial disorders.

Why would you compromise the well being of your family when dealing with humidity is really a simple? A beautiful yet affordable and highly effective method of providing the correct level of humidity indoor is through the application of a 'Mist Fountain.' It produces a continuous flow of mist into the air and water vapor that provides enough humidity.

Here are the three expert tips that demystify the inner-workings of a mist fountain:

1.) How is the mist produced?

The mist fountain works through electricity. The major part is an electronic module. This module operates by means of 'Piezoelectricity' producing vibrations from the ultrasonic pulses at a frequency of 1.7 million pulses per second.

2.) Mist fountain and piezoelectricity:

Certain materials like crystals, some ceramics and bones can produce an electric capacity due to some kind of mechanical impact or stress. Since the electronic module in the mist fountain is made of nickel or titanium coated ceramic disk, it produces piezoelectric effect which is reversible. Ceramic disk can produce electric capacity when stress is applied or it can produce stress when electricity is applied. The mist fountain uses the principle by applying electricity to the ceramic disk to produce the (stress) ultrasonic vibrations while immersed under water. Negative ions are produced and mist or fog is dispersed in the air. Mists are very tiny particles of water in the atmosphere which evaporates and provides the needed humidity to the environment.

3.) Water Usage:

De-mineralized water is best for a misting fountain. It serves as a good conductor. Distilled water is not ideal because it is the purest form of water making it a poor conductor. Water makes the electronic module run in electricity so it must be totally immersed to produce negative ions and mist. Electronic modules are made in such a way that it can detect low water through a sensor that protects the mist unit from damage.

There are various types of mist fountains in the market. You need one especially for the dry winter months to stay away from irritable health problems. Try to look for some important features like the following if you decide to shop one for yourself

1.) Some models come with humidity monitor; it's okay if you have a mist fountain without a humidity monitor, the sign that you are experiencing excess humidity is wet glass windows. This tells you to minimize it.

2.) It must be easy to clean and maintain; regular cleaning is important to prevent the accumulation of germs and bacteria in the water reservoir or else the mist fountain will produce foul odor.

3.) There are some misting fountain models that are equipped with UV lights to retard the growth of bacteria in the water

4.) It must operate quietly and energy efficient. The additional features of multi-colored LEDs make the misting fountain a beautiful décor in your home but it does not consume so much energy.

A misting fountain clears the air of dust and allergens. Having a mist fountain in your indoors is like enjoying fresh air in the vicinity of a waterfall or a beach.
