Server Room Monitoring of Environmental Conditions Reduces the Risk of Cataclysmic Failure

Whatever line of business an organization is in environmental monitoring of the server room and IT equipment is an absolute must to ensure business continuity. Environmental conditions that cause the breakdown of a network can cost an organization large amounts of lost revenue and impaired business performance. Businesses rely more and more on their IT and communications infrastructure making any loss of data or network downtime catastrophic for them. Providing conditions that are as stable as possible helps to ensure continuity and reliability.

Effective monitoring of some key conditions, temperature, humidity and water leakage, together with an alerting system will enable the IT department to keep networks operational, avoid intermittent problems and hopefully steer clear of the major failures that can occur if environmental conditions deteriorate undetected.

Temperature monitoring in computer rooms and server rooms

Racks and servers tend to operate more efficiently when they're cool. Running at temperatures too high can cause network downtime or can create a situation where there is intermittent unreliability of equipment. Although all servers come with internal cooling fans these will not be sufficient to keep the temperature down in data centers and rack rooms. Modern computers, servers and routers create a huge amount of heat.

Air conditioning units are necessary to maintain temperatures at a level where equipment can work efficiently. Temperature sensors should be positioned at various locations throughout the data room to ensure that there aren't problem areas or hotspots, for instance, behind equipment. Combined with an effective alerting system the temperature sensors will notify the necessary staff if temperatures vary outside a set range.

Humidity sensors within server and IT rooms

Humidity within an IT environment can be incredibly damaging. If humidity is too low then static can build up and static discharge becomes a major issue. Alternatively high humidity can lead to the formation of condensation which can cause electrical failures and corrosion. Maintaining both temperature and humidity within satisfactory confines is crucial to business continuity.

Water leak detection within server rooms

In the process of cooling the air in the room, air conditioning units collect water and therefore have the potential to create water leaks or spills. It's a good idea to have these kept well away from the servers and to have water leak detectors nearby.

To ensure reliability and efficiency of data centers, environmental conditions must be monitored. The installation of independent monitoring equipment for temperature, humidity and water leaks coupled with efficient alerting facilities will significantly reduce the risk of IT failure. Failing to install such a system can lead to catastrophic breakdowns with huge losses in business productivity.
