Basic Essentials of Dehumidifier


A dehumidifier is an essential tool in any house or company as it helps reduce the humidity level by removing excess of moisture from the air. Humid air is harmful to human health in many ways. It can also lead to wall stains, peeling of paint, and water build up.

You can log at time intervals, like every minute or every hour. Most of these systems take about 5 minutes to set up.


You can log temperature and humidity data with a stand alone Data Logger. You can configure data loggers with your PC and you can set them up to log at desired intervals, like every 10 minutes. Then you can leave it for your desired period of time, like 5 days. Then you can connect the data logger back to your PC to retrieve the data. You can export the data into spreadsheets and make charts for analysis. It could help you to forecast what future temperature and humidity may be. It can also help you determine if a certain environment needs more industrial hardware for extreme conditions. An example of a stand alone temperature and humidity data logger is DL-100T485. If your PC doesn't have an RS-485 port, you can use a USB to RS-485 converter like I-7561 which has Windows 7, Vista, XP and Linux Drivers to communicate with it.

Buying a clothes dryer for your home is a fairly simple decision process. Once you have read this report, your buying decision might even be a bit easier.

Four manufacturers produce the clothes dryers that account for 80% of dryer sales in America. Those four primary brands are: GE, Maytag, Kenmore (a Sears brand), and Whirlpool.

There are other generic brand names that are sold in the marketplace, and most of those are subsidiaries of the major manufacturing companies. Maytag makes Amana. Electrolux makes Frigidaire, Westinghouse, and White-Westinghouse appliances. GE makes Hotpoint. And, both KitchenAid and Roper are made by Whirlpool.

There are really only five choices to make when choosing your next clothes dryer:

1. Size of Tub

2. Gas or Electric

3. Thermostat or Moisture Sensor Shutoff

4. Quiet Dry

5. Other Gadgets

SIZE OF TUB

There are three basic size designations in washers and dryers. There is Extra Large Capacity, Super Capacity and Super Capacity Plus, or a variation thereof. The actual volume difference between each of these size designations is really quite small on the grand scheme of things. Usually, we are talking an extra pair or two of blue jeans for each size increase.

When selecting the size capacity of a machine, it might be all right (though not recommended) to mix up your machine purchases, but you do not want to have your dryer size smaller than your washer size. It would be a real pain to fill your washer, wash your clothes, and then not be able to get all of your clothes into the dryer!

If there are one or two people in your household, then the Extra Large Capacity could make sense. But, if you have a house full of children, you should go ahead and spend the extra money to get a larger-sized machine. If your wife has one of the smaller machines, she will certainly have to run more loads in order to wash everyone's laundry.

Generally, if you have four people in your home, you will have to do two extra loads of laundry using the Extra Large Capacity, instead of the Super Capacity Plus machine. More loads of laundry equates to more water usage, more heating fuel usage (electric or gas), and a grumpier wife, since she spends an extra two to three hours a week doing laundry. That $80-$120 you are saving now, may cost you well over that amount over the life of your washer and dryer.

GAS OR ELECTRIC

The person who built your house usually makes the gas or electric decision for you, whether you like it or not. Most homes have either a 240-volt plug or a gas connector in the laundry room. Few, if any, builders put in both options.

If your home is equipped with the 240-volt plug, I highly recommend that you look to see if your plug is a three- or four-prong plug, prior to going to the store. Appliance manufacturers sell the actual dryer cords separate from the dryer. So, the retailer will ask you which plug you need with your machine.

If you want to save the ten dollars or so, you can use the dryer cord that is on the clothes dryer you are replacing. If the dryer cord that is currently on your machine is flimsy or brittle, I would strongly suggest buying the new cord. To do otherwise leaves your home vulnerable to a fire hazard.

If you have the choice between gas and electricity for your clothes dryer, gas machines will generally run another $50 or so. If you have to change your laundry configuration from gas to electric, you may very well spend that much on the electrician alone. Additionally, it is a well-known fact that gas dryers use less energy than electric dryers. So, over the long haul, your gas dryer will be more economical than your electric dryer --- even Consumer Reports recommends that you buy the gas dryer for this very reason.

THERMOSTAT OR MOISTURE SENSOR SHUTOFF

Thermostat controlled dryers are the dryers that only give you an option for timed drying.

More expensive dryers give you the option for timed drying or Moisture Sensor Shutoffs. Each manufacturer describes the Moisture Sensor Shutoff in different ways. Whirlpool calls it AccuDry. Some manufacturers refer to it as Energy Saver. Whatever they call it, the concept is the same. It has a moisture-sensor in the tub, and when the humidity level drops below a certain level, the machine will decide that the clothes are dry, and the dryer will shut off on its own.

Consumer Reports deems this an essential feature on any dryer that you might buy. The reasons are many:

1. Overdrying can damage or shrink fabrics, and moisture sensors will minimize this risk.

2. By shutting itself off when the clothes are done drying, you are no longer forced to waste gas or electricity drying "already dry" fabrics.

3. By running the dryer for a shorter period of time, you can wash more clothes in less time. Your wife will thank you.

QUIET DRY

Some machines have an extra quiet motor. It made a big difference in my home, since our laundry room is less than twenty feet from our living room. With our old, cheap dryer, we would need to turn our television up, if we were running laundry while we were in the living room. Just the very experience of drying clothes was enough to give me a headache. With our new quiet dry machine, we are not even aware that the dryer is running, until the buzzer goes off telling us that it is done. Awesome.

OTHER GADGETS

Clothes dryers cannot really get that technical. The additional options that are available on some machines are: heat level and special fabric settings. Really, they are the same thing, but the fabric settings take a lot of the guesswork out of figuring out what temperature you can run for each your fabric types.

Some machines have a buzzer to let you know when the dryer is finished. This one is nice sometimes, especially if you are trying to do as much laundry as you can in a short time span.

Lights inside the drum are a nice addition, though not always necessary.

TIPS TO EXTEND THE LIFE OF YOUR DRYER

Keeping good airflow in your machine is the one, essential step you can take to get the most life out of your clothes dryer. There are several factors that can affect airflow, and we will cover those factors here.

Any reduction in airflow creates several problems.

1. A clogged dryer is less efficient and uses more gas or electric to dry clothes.

2. It puts additional wear-and-tear on the machine's motor.

3. And, most importantly, it creates a fire hazard.

EXHAUST VENTILATION:

All of the manufacturers and Consumer Reports recommend using either rigid or flexible metal ducting for exhaust ventilation tubing. They strongly recommend against using the plastic or foil exhaust ventilation tubes. The reasons are many.

1. They are notorious collectors of lint, and can get clogged easily.

2. The can be stepped on and crushed, preventing good airflow.

3. They can sag, also preventing proper airflow.

4. They can easily be torn and damaged.

Anytime the ventilation tube gets clogged or blocked, it can force lint to back up into your dryer causing additional blockages.

Even with metal ducting, you should clean out your ventilation tube once a year.

LINT FILTER:

Some appliance manufacturers put the lint filter in the door, while others put it on top of the machine. For ease of cleaning, it is a matter of personal preference.

It is very important that you should clean your lint filter between each use. If you fail to clean it between each load, you run the risk of having the lint fall back into the internal components of the machine.

Any accumulations of lint are always a fire hazard.

Excess lint in your dryer can ignite and catch fire. This could easily destroy your dryer, and very possibly catch your house on fire.

In fact, the Wall Street Journal suggested that dryer lint is the perfect companion for camping or hiking trips, since it is light and easy-to-carry, and it makes excellent kindling for your campfire.

If you use dryer sheets when you dry your clothes, then you need to pay special attention to this tip.

Dryer sheets can reduce static and add a nice scent to your laundry, because they have chemicals in them. What few people realize is that these chemicals are released from the dryer sheet when they are heated, and they fill the hot air inside of your dryer.

As the machine is running, and after the cycle is finished, these chemicals settle on the various components inside your dryer, including the lint filters. After a period of time, these chemicals can create a clear, unseen barrier to your dryer's airflow.

Test this idea. Pull your lint filter from your machine and run it under water. Where the water pools and does not flow through, those chemicals have created an impenetrable barrier to your dryer's airflow.

Every few months, you should wash out your lint filter using soap, water and a sponge, to keep airflow at its optimum.

1. Wiring regulations

Since electric and water can make for a fatal combination, strict regulations were introduced dividing the bathroom into 4 zones: 0, 1, 2, 3. Zone 0 is in the bath. Zone 1 extends vertically 2.25m above the bath. Zone 2 extends in all directions for 0.6m from zone1 and zone 3 extends laterally for 2.4m from zone 2.

It is essential that you install the correct fan in the correct zone. Bathroom fans come in two voltages; Mains voltage (240v) and SELV or Safety Extra Low Voltage (12v). Mains voltage bathroom extractor fans may only be used in Zone 3 of the bathroom. In Zones 1 and 2 SELV bathroom fans (12 volt) ONLY must be used, with the transformer being housed in Zone 3. The only exception to this rule is the Airflow QuietAir: A mains voltage bathroom extractor fan that has been specifically designed with an IP45 rating to be used in all 3 zones. Inline fans are another special type of 240v bathroom extractor fan which are housed in the loft space above the bathroom in the middle of two lengths of ducting. Since the motor, impellars and all electrical parts are out of the zonal area, with only the duct and grille in the bathroom ceiling, they too are suitable for use in zone 1 or 2 above the bath or shower.

2. Types of bathroom extractor fan

There are two main types of bathroom extractor fan: Axial and Centrifugal. Axial fans are the ones that you are used to seeing on walls and ceilings and tend to have air extraction rates of between 85m3/hr and 95m3/hr on the 4 inch models. These are suitable for standard installations where the fan is intended to be ducted through the wall. Centrifugal fans tend to be (but not always) inline duct fans. (see previous section). Centrifugal fans are usually much more powerful than axial fans with air extraction rates of bewteen 110m3/hr and 220m3/hr on the 4 inch models. Centrifugal fans are particularly well suited to installations where long duct lengths are required. The Vent Axia Solo Plus, for example, can be used in duct runs up to 50m!

3. Sizes of bathroom fans

Domestic bathroom extractor fans come in two sizes: 4 inch /100mm and 6 inch / 150mm. In almost every case a 4 inch bathroom extractor fan will suffice. Six inch fans need only be considered in bathrooms greater than three metres squared, or where special circumstances require a more powerful fan,...such as bathrooms with no natural ventilation or particularly cold, north facing bathrooms.

4. Air Extraction Rate

Measured in 'Litres per Second' (L/s) or 'Metres Cubed per Hour' (m3/hr), the air extraction rate of a bathroom extractor fan is one of the most important considerations. The Building Regulations stipulate that a bathroom extractor fan must extract at least 15L/s in a standard domestic bathroom. Most 4 inch bathroom extractor fans far exceed this minimum requirement, and nowadays the standard is 85m3/hr. Any bathroom extractor fan with an extraction rate of 90m3/hr or above may be considered powerful.

5. Operation

Bathroom extractor fans have a range of operational features to suit different applications. The most simple is on/off via the bathroom light switch or integral pullcord. Bathroom fans with integral timers are great in bathrooms where large build ups of steam cause condensation problems, as the over run timer will keep the fan running for a desired period after it has been turned off....particularly useful if the fan is wired into the lighting circuit. Parents may prefer a bathroom fan with a PIR sensor which will operate the fan automatically when anybody enters the bathroom, whilst Landlords like those with humidity sensors, which switch on automatically when the relative humidity reaches a set level. This means that tenants are not relied upon to manually operate the bathroom fan.

6. Noise

Typical dB measurements for axial bathroom fans range between 35dB(A) and 45dB(A) with the more powerful centrifugal bathroom fans between 40dB(A) and 55dB(A). Whilst centrifugal fans are louder, it should be remembered that they are housed in the loft space and so are insulated and further away, lessesning the volume somewhat.

7. Aesthetics

Remember: you are likely to see this fan everytime you use the bathroom. The money you saved on it when purchasing will soon be forgotten, so don't install an ugly fan just because it's cheap. Partial Discharge Testing of Rotating Apparatus


Statistics indicate that up to 37 percent of rotating equipment failures occur due to stator insulation breakdown. For several decades, partial discharge (PD) testing has been a very beneficial tool for assessing the stator insulation condition of medium-voltage rotating apparatus. This article examines how PD activity occurs and why PD testing is unique as applied to generators and motors.

What is Partial Discharge?

Partial discharge is a localized partial breakdown within or on the surface of insulation that causes a spark to occur. This partial failure of the insulation is generally caused by poor design, flaws, voids, or contamination that create a localized stress that exceeds the dielectric breakdown strength of the insulation material. The sparking activity then leads to further insulation decomposition through a combination of thermal, chemical, and electrical phenomena and persists until complete failure occurs. The detection and monitoring of PD activity has been found to be very useful in assessing the condition of electrical equipment. Although PD can occur at lower voltages, equipment operating below 2,000 volts to ground usually does not discharge frequently and usually fails by other mechanisms.

Rotating Apparatus Insulation

Switchgear, cable, and transformer insulation cannot tolerate PD activity very well. Generally, PD activity will lead to further destruction of the insulation and eventual failure. Therefore, these types of equipment should always operate PD free.

The design of rotating apparatus creates inherent difficulties that make producing PD-free equipment impossible. The complex configuration of stator coil insulation, difficulties with the manufacturing impregnation process, and the problems fitting the coils within the stator slots can all create voids which lead to PD activity. Since PD in rotating apparatus is inevitable, the coil insulation employs mica tape which is very resistant to partial discharge damage. So, when assessing the condition of rotating apparatus, it becomes very important to monitor and trend PD activity over the course of many years as opposed to assessing the condition of other types of equipment insulation where periodic PD testing may suffice.

PD Sensors

Effective on-line PD testing of switchgear, cable, and transformer insulation generally involves taking regular (annual) spot checks using temporary sensors that are safely attached to grounded components of the apparatus. The main goal of this procedure is to ensure a PD-free apparatus.

In order to best monitor rotating apparatus, permanent coupling capacitors are connected to the ma- chine output bus during an outage. These sensors provide a standardized method to decouple the PD signals. Additional data can be obtained by using the RTD's that are embedded in the insulation as auxiliary PD measurement points. The RTD's act as antennas that can pick up the high frequency pulses associated with PD.

Valuable Data

As previously stated, the mica insulation is quite im- pervious to most PD activity. However, large amplitude discharges occurring from voids in the insulation or end winding contamination can lead to direct insulation failure.

This is just one category of problems that can be detected.

Since the rotating equipment PD activity is trended over many years, it is more economical to install permanent monitors than conducting regular spot surveys. These moni- tors (see Figure 3) accept other sensors for trending load, temperature, and humidity data along with the PD data so that correlations can be made that provide additional infor- mation for more precise diagnostics of the cause, location, and type of the PD activity occurring.

Insulation can also fail from the thermal or mechanical wear over the course of many years from overheating, ther- mal cycling and loose wedging. In these cases, increases in PD activity will show as a slow rise over time. This type of PD activity relates directly to the machine's overall thermal or mechanical condition, as the PD activity is not the pri- mary problem but is actually an indicator of the presence of other age-related problems.

Conclusion

Monitoring PD activity in rotating apparatus is very im- portant for increasing reliability and prolonging equipment life. All generators and critical motors should be monitored continuously and consideration should be given to perform- ing annual PD spot testing to the balance of plant medium voltage rotating apparatus.

Calibration in the Cleanroom


The importance of particle counting, testing of HEPA filters, etc. is widely known, but how important is the calibration of the associated instrumentation within a cleanroom environment?

One of the most prevalent devices in a cleanroom environment is the Magnehelic gauge. These are used as an easy to read indicator for operators to confirm that the differential pressure between two rooms is as it should be, they are often used in conjunction with an alarm monitoring system. The question is, have yours been calibrated correctly though? In our experience gauges like this are checked and perhaps adjusted at 0Pa but that's it. Magnehelic gauges are known to be very accurate; however they still require more than a zero point calibration check. A full 5 point, rising and falling test is the most thorough calibration that can performed with these and many other pressure gauges.

UKAS Calibration companies are able to provided the knowledge and training to perform complete calibrations of any instrumentation within a cleanroom. This ensures that customers receive a complete package of cleanroom testing and validation as well as calibration.

Refering closely to the "Orange Guide" (The MHRA Rules and Guidance for Pharmaceutical Manufacturers and Distributors 2007) which states the following with regard to calibration, Equipment Section 3.14

"Measuring, weighing, recording and control equipment should be calibrated and checked at defined intervals by appropriate methods. Adequate records of such tests should be maintained."

The guide states the above for good reasons, some of which are identified below.

Differential pressure switch calibration

One example of a situation encountered by our engineers was in a plant room at a pharmaceutical site. The differential pressure switch across a bag filter had been set to alarm to the BMS at 240Pa to flag up the need to change the filter. However when our engineers calibrated this switch we found it to be switching at just 80Pa! The BMS interface was therefore prematurely flagging up this filter as being blocked. Discussions with the customer found that the particular filter in question had been changed more often than others. Thanks to our findings the faulty pressure switch was changed thus saving the customer any further unnecessary filter replacements, not to mention time and money.

AHU sensor calibration

Another area where calibration can aid in energy and money saving is within the Air Handling Units themselves. Correct calibration of temperature and relative humidity probes that control the heating, cooling, humidifying and dehumidifying can save energy. The outputs of the sensors control the amount of heating and cooling that is called for via the BMS and conflicting sensor outputs at various stages of the AHU can result in wasted energy from steam heating the air and chillers running unnecessarily to cool air. We have witnessed on several occasions systems that are both heating AND cooling at the same time.

Furthermore, sensor outputs must correspond with the condition that the sensor is measuring otherwise the error will be passed onto the BMS which will produce further errors. A situation could arise from this where your BMS system says that a room is being controlled at 21°C and your EMS says that the room is at 23°C. Offsets created by the calibration of the BMS sensors can eradicate these discrepancies to allow the system to be more easily manageable, more accurate and more reliable as an information source.

The most important instrumentation within a cleanroom is the environmental monitoring system (EMS). This should be a CFR21 Part 11 logging system monitoring several aspects of the room such as temperature, relative humidity, and the pressure between rooms. It is crucial that these are calibrated properly to help maintain regulatory compliance. This calibration ideally should be performed during a plant shutdown due to the amount of access required by the engineers and the disruption caused to the EMS system. To reduce confusion and any discrepancies, indicators and gauges within the cleanroom such as the aforementioned Magnehelic gauges should be calibrated to the same method as the EMS sensors.

In conclusion it has to be said that calibration of instrumentation in cleanrooms is very important from the logging system of the EMS to the air handling units supplying the air to the room. Each part of the system plays vital role in the efficient operation of a cleanroom.

The design of the Climate Control Sensor (CCS) is compact to save space in the vehicle. One-Upping the TV Weather Guy


When you watch TV to get your weather, chances are the TV weatherman will get it right! Afterall, he (or she) gets their information directly from the US Weather Service (USWS) itself and Lord knows, they're never wrong...right? WRONG! I know of dozens of times when the USWS gave a faulty forecast, but guess what? I knew they were wrong as soon as the forecast was broadcast. How?

I've got a home weather station. You know, the kind that's loaded with weather instruments and gadgets that give you weather data? Yea, I've got one and I learned how to use it. I got all my weather lessons right off the Internet and a few short books. The info is easily available and the sites are very interesting to boot.

If you buy a weather station, I suggest you get the wireless kind. You put a battery into the sensors (which are sealed against moisture) once in a while and you just leave them outside in the weather. The sensors take the information that the instruments send them and they, in turn, send the information to the unit in the house, on my computer. I simply click on the application and there's all this great information about the weather right outside my house.

I get the temperature (indoors and outdoors), the humidity, the wind speed, wind direction, the atmospheric pressure and whether it's rising or falling, the relative humidity, any rainfall amounts and a current weather map of my area. So, how did I know that the TV weatherman was wrong? I knew there was a front headed my way simply by comparing the wind direction and speed, the atmospheric reading, which was falling rapidly and watching the weather map of the area west of me.

See, the winds in this month blow primarily from the south. Well, in a matter of minutes, the wind direction changed 180 degrees and the low that was to the north of our area began to move south, with the wind. The barometer told me that the low pressure ridge was approaching quickly and I knew the weather was going to get stormy. The TV guy was saying that we could expect sunny and fair weather the next day. Boy, was he wrong!

We got 2 inches of rain that night but I knew it was coming because of my weather station and the lessons about weather that I'd gotten online. Dewpoint Meters and Their Uses


Dewpoint meters are devices which are specially designed in order to measure the temperature at which dew is formed. At a certain temperature, dew is formed. There is a constant biometric pressure of air which must be cooled in order for the water vapor to condense. This condensed vapor then turns into water and dew is formed. This entire process will take place when the dewpoint is right.

What is the dewpoint?

The dewpoint meters are used for measuring the temperature at which dew forms. Dew forms when a certain saturation point is met. This point is referred to as the dewpoint. However, when this point is below the freezing point, it is known as frost point since the water vapor then doesn't condense to water but it then changes to frost through deposition. The point at where this process would take place is referred to as dewpoint and is required to be measured in industries for several reasons.

The dewpoint meters are used in order to determine when this particular point is met. The meter uses its sensors in order to detect the changes in humidity and temperature. dewpoint has been associated with relative humidity. The closer the point is to the current air temperature, higher would be the relative humidity that would be indicated. This device can measure the moisture level in gas or air samples through positive pressure. The accuracy that is provided by some of the newer devices is quite impressive. Many of these can read ppm moisture as well as read the dewpoint temperature in gas or air.

This point usually needs to be measured in field applications for painting situations. In fact, these devices are one of the most critical devices to be used for analysis to confirm conditions are correct before you can paint. Several of the new meters include integrated magnets which allow remote monitoring of data on steel substrates and have a memory which can store a large number of readings over days weeks or even months. Features of Good Server Rack and Computer Server Racks


It is common for management in a smaller company to OK new servers and somehow forget they need to go somewhere. We get frantic calls daily from customers saying they need a server rack or cabinet for their new hardware.

This is where things can get a bit dicey. Many of today's servers are blade servers and they can be from 29-42 inches deep. They also run hot and are very noisy. One Network Manager said he thought he was sitting on the wing of a propeller driven plane it was so loud!

Since blade servers pull air from the front and blow it out the back, a quality server rack cabinet will require special venting for air flow. If you need a secure cabinet, the front and rear doors should be mesh or perforated. This allows you to lock the doors and still be able to see your hardware. Depending on your room, you may also want to install a fan for extra air movement. Many servers use mounting brackets that have a flange that fits in a square hole on the rackrails of a cabinet or rack. It is imperative that the cabinet you choose have this type of rackrail.

There are other types of server racks referred to as 4-post server racks. In most cases, they are a frame that has 2-sets of vertical square holed rackrails that adjust in depth. Some of the better 4-post racks can adjust from 26-42 inches deep. This is a very functional low cost way to put your hardware on.

How to Buy the Cheapest and Best Dehumidifier


Dehumidifying a home or room can be a real challenge. This is especially true during winter months where opening windows is just not an option. Mold formation is one of the leading problems that come with high humidity levels, and it does not take much humidity for mold to form. In fact, at humidity rates of 65 percent or higher, mold can form. The first thing that needs to be considered is the size of the area where the dehumidifier is going to be used. The larger the room, then obviously the larger the humid air extraction capability it will need. This is especially true if the goal is reduce humidity levels below the 50 percent mark. Dehumidifiers are rated according a system called "pint." The pint number will decide the size of room it is ideal for. Most dehumidifiers made today will have built in sensors called humidistats which measure the humidity levels and operate accordingly. It will also have different speed settings as well. The following is a list of different pint numbers and the room size they are built for.

• 400 square feet -25 pint

• 800 square feet- 40 pint

• 1000 square feet- 50 pint

• 1400 square feet -70 to 80 pint

What needs to be remember here is that the above examples of pint size refers to homes or building that are not located near large bodies of water. The recommended thing to do for houses or buildings located near water is to double the capacity. So, a 400 square feet room would require at least 50 pint dehumidifier to have any useful impact, and so on. Apart from location, the next factor which needs to be taken into account is ceiling height. Ideally, 50 percent should be added to the pint number for rooms with ceilings as high as 10 feet. Rooms with ceilings measuring at 8 feet will only require a 25 percent increase in pint number.

Pint numbers represent the amount of humidity it will be able to extract from the air in a 24 hour time frame. Dehumidifiers for home will come with removal drip pans that need to be emptied every so often. If a dehumidifier is bought which is not big enough for a given area, then it will run continuously. This is not efficient in the long run. This in turn is why it makes more sense to install one that is big enough, even though it will cost a little more to purchase.
