Basic Essentials of Dehumidifier

A dehumidifier is an essential tool in any house or company as it helps reduce the humidity level by removing excess of moisture from the air. Humid air is harmful to human health in many ways. It can also lead to wall stains, peeling of paint, and water build up.

The tool is used mostly in winter when there is cold temperature and limited ventilation. In such a case regulating humidity level becomes very important to set an optimum balance for living healthy. Dehumidifiers are commonly used in the winter, when outside surfaces are cold and ventilation is limited by insulation systems.

Compressor, condenser, evaporator, fan, and collection unit are the essential components of the dehumidifier. Compressor begins its operation when the power is switched on and functions to compress the refrigerant gas. When the gas is passed into the evaporator, it gets cold because the gas when enters the components expands and cools down. Then the fan works to pass the air over the evaporator and the condenser to draw in moist air. The moist air is then dripped out into the collection tank for disposal. The cycle continues in a similar manner with the air passing over the condenser once again. In the condenser it gets warm and the same cycle repeats from cooling down to disposal.

There are various types of dehumidifiers and each work on their unique set of principles. The basic and the most common principle of working is the vapor compression refrigeration cycle. According to this operation, air is passed over a cold surface to remove the moisture condensed onto the surface. The condensed moisture then starts dripping out into a container and is then disposed completely.

Some of the significant types are the heat pump, chemical absorbent, dehumidifying ventilator, and home-made dehumidifiers. Heat pump makes use of an electrically driven refrigeration cycle to draw out moisture from the air. These are the most common types and have relatively complex machinery with a heat pump, two sets of coils, fan, control panel, water bucket, and drain system. In this type the moist air is circulated over the evaporator to cool down the air. This cooling reduces the air temperature and cause condensation of water vapor. The condensate is then collected in the bucket and drained out.

Chemical absorbent dehumidifiers are very effective for removing humidity from air especially during hot and humid climate. This type makes use of a chemical drying agent or a desiccant to extract moisture from air through a duct.

Dehumidifying ventilators work on the principle of sensors that are used to detect high levels of humidity. This type becomes functional only when signals of high humidity level are given by the sensors.

Homemade dehumidifiers extract moisture using bags of de-icing salt that is considered to be a natural condenser. To increase the effectiveness a fan is used to blow air into the bucket which is then collected in the container and disposed.

Dehumidifiers are available in different sizes and shapes to meet the needs and taste of different individuals.
