Lighting is very important as well. You need to see well in this room or you will miss stains that may be on the clothing and once dried are usually impossible to remove. The best lighting would be track lighting as you can turn the lights to shine in all areas of the room.
The floor is often tile, which is great for messes that can occur. You may drop bleach or the kids may throw muddy clothing on the floor. If you have carpet in this room, you will be spending just as much time cleaning the carpet or replacing the carpet as doing the laundry.
The walls should be painted. The laundry room is often very humid, wallpaper will not withstand this humidity, and you can find it falling down in the corners. The best colors to use are bright and cheery. Hanging pictures on the walls are other great idea as well as adding a few vases on the counter with fake flowers. Be sure if you hang pictures that you do not use wood frames due to the humidity once again.
