Wireless, Solar Powered Weather Instruments

If you're a self-proclaimed "weather buff," you'll want the latest and the greatest that you can find, when it comes to technology and your weather instruments. While the older stuff is ok, there are new advances in technology everyday that makes the fine art of weather watching easier and more convenient. After all, who wants to actually go out in the weather in order to watch it, right?

Some of the finest equipment available comes as a wireless package and more and more you're seeing the instruments run off of solar batteries. That means you don't even have to take the time to put batteries in them anymore.

Take, for instance the Oregon Scientific WMR968 Cable Free Complete Weather Station, which sells for about $205 at Amazon. This instrumentation package comes with indoor and outdoor sensors and also displays local weather/barometric pressure forecasts. That's just the start. It also has a calendar/clock, an alarm that sounds when sensors detect conditions beyond parameters set by the user, a memory button for retrieving past data, and an AC power adapter. This super-duper wireless weather station features an advanced touch-screen operation with large graphic icons. Those icons easily show temperature, humidity, rainfall rate, wind speed and wind direction. You can just touch the screen and you get exactly the information you need!

With this magnificent piece of technology you also get an up to the minute weather forecast with large graphic icons, barometric pressure readings in numerals with the pressure history in bar chart form. Nope, that's not all. Also included is indoor and outdoor temperature and humidity readings, rainfall measurements, wind speed and direction data, time with 12 and/or 24-hour clock display options and a Month/date/day display. The specific sensors include indoor thermo-hygrometer with barometer, long range, solar-powered outdoor thermo-hygrometer, long range, solar-powered self-emptying rain gauge and a long range, solar-powered anemometer. Wow! Now, that's a LOT of bang for the buck. There is an optional battery back-up system available just in case. For $205, that is an incredible bargain!

Another superior weather station is the Davis Vantage Pro2 Weather Station, Wireless, Solar Powered Integrated Sensor Suite for $293. This one doesn't come with it's own digital screen. All you have to do is connect it to your own computer though and it's good to go.

While this is a superior station, a WeatherLink Module and a Weather Envoy MUST BE PURCHASED SEPARATELY to use it. When you purchase the Weatherlink application, you'll choose the Wireless Weather Envoy and all your weather data will be transmitted directly from your sensors wirelessly to your computer. Some of the features include: 2.5 Second Updating, Indoor/Outdoor temperature & humidity readings, dew point wind speed and direction, wind chill rainfall totals, rainfall rates per Hour, sStreaming "Ticker Tape" of current conditions, barometric pressure and a Graph of digital time and dates. Also there is an eight moon phases indicator, a weather forecast, a storm and temperature alarm, a heat index alarm and sunrise/sunset time for your area and finally a minimum and maximum for just about all of the data reports.

One more truly wonderful weather station instrument can be found in the RainWise MKIII Solar Powered Wireless Pro Weather Station. This is definitely on the more expensive side of prices, at about $1050. It is a very nice looking unit with mahogany base. The MK III Sensor Assembly broadcasts the weather data to one or more receivers, which means that you can have as many displays and computer interfaces in a home or facility as you like, using a single sensor assembly outside. The solar charged battery supply is guaranteed to provide continues operation below 60 degrees latitude and The MK III will operate for a minimum 60 days without sun. It includes all the normal weather instruments and is very easy to use and assemble.

Whichever weather station is your preference, consider all the variables, including instrumentation, guarantees, monitor consoles, length of time without sunshine, need for outside applications, etc.

Only you know what you'll be happy with so choose wisely. Regardless of which station you choose, you'll find that home wireless solar units are the most convenient and problem free. You can either buy your weather instruments separately or go the weather station route. I know what I like. What about you?
