Formax FD 8702CC Cross-Cut Multimedia Office Shredder Review

The Formax FD8702CC is a powerful shredder with enhanced capabilities, destroying paper at a Level 3 Security, as well as many forms of digital media such as compact discs. Here is a closer look at some of the strengths and weaknesses of the FD8702CC.

Sensitive documents and other information don't only come in paper form anymore. If you've ever been stuck worrying about how to dispose of non-paper or digital media that may contain sensitive data, the FD 8702CC may be just the shredder for you. Right along side the normal paper feed is a dedicated feed opening that accepts compact discs, DVDs, ZIPs and floppies, as well as common credit cards and tapes. The regular feed easily takes staples and paper clips, making the FD 8702CC, in our opinion, one of the most powerfully versatile shredders available, and certainly of those we have tested.
Company literature states that the FD 8702CC offers a capacity of 40 sheets at a time. While we didn't quite test it to that limit, we see no reason why it wouldn't be able to perform to that rather impressive capacity. Keep in mind that overall shredder capacities vary according to such factors as humidity, paper stock weight, and the quality of the power source you are using. The FD 8702CC's cutting heads are of the highest quality, constructed of heat treated tempered steel and Formax guarantees them for the life of the machine.
In order to cut down on identity theft and other types of consumer fraud, congress implemented regulations in 2005 that require businesses or individuals that are disposing of documents containing sensitive employee or customer information shred such documents at a security level of 3 or higher. The FD 8702CC is indeed a cross cut Level 3 shredder, and thus offers a great and versatile machine that can protect you from stiff state and federal fines as well as possible litigation.
Ease of use is a great quality to have in a machine that sees a lot of different users, and the FD 8702CC delivers in that regard as well. The control panel is easy to understand, even for relative beginners. Optical sensors are used for auto on-and-off operation, and there's a manual button for items like film, which the sensors won't detect. The control panel also features a handy load indicator which informs you if you're overfeeding the machine.
Maintenance is relatively easy with this machine as well. The FD 8702CC's control panel features a reverse mode for automatic cleaning of the cutting heads and will even indicate to you when the mechanism needs oiling. Best of all, is how the FD 8702CC can keep a record of your usage, and display the stats to service technicians if need be.
The FD 8702CC has some nice safety features as well, such as automatic shutoff if the bin door is open and/or when the waste bin is full. There is also an onboard circuit breaker that keeps electrical overloads from occurring.

Weaknesses:

Perhaps due to the FD 8702CC's increased abilities, it only has a motor speed of about 11 feet per minute. We don't think that's necessarily a bad tradeoff. However, other large shredders run at significantly higher speeds.
While the 9.4-inch feed opening will work for the vast majority of paper sizes, productivity may slow a bit if you are shredding a lot of paper that is larger, such as computer printouts. If you need to shred larger format sheets, you will have to fold them in half to feed them through the opening of this machine.

Formax FD 8400CC Cross-Cut Paper Shredder Review

The Formax FD 8400CC aims to offer small to medium offices FACTA-level security, easy maintenance and impressive sheet capacity. Here is a closer look at some of the strengths and weaknesses of the Formax FD 8400CC.

The FD 8400CC has to be one of the more easy to use shredders on the market. One of the most convenient features is the optical sensor that's placed in the paper feed that is able to detect when there is paper placed into slot, and starts and stops the shredder automatically. This allows for easy "walk away" operation, enhancing your overall productivity. The machine also features a manual button that the user can activate when he or she are shredding lighter materials which the sensor may not be able to detect. Our testers loved the easy to decipher LED control panel, and really appreciated the well-illuminated load indicator light that lets you know when the shredder is operating at peak capacity and helps you to prevent overfeeding.

The FD 8400CC's motor claims to operate at 30 feet per minute, with a nice sheet capacity of 20 sheets per pass. Our testers found that the shredder could operate at very near that capacity without any problems. It's important to note, however, that capacity will vary depending on your power source, the paper stock you are shredding and the relative humidity where you live. You should find this machine to be a great performer no matter the conditions, however.

Level 3 cross cut shredding is very secure, and is what is required by law when you are discarding certain kinds of financial and personal information of your employees and customers. The laws were passed to combat ID theft and other types of consumer fraud, and failing to comply can lead to fines and civil suits. The FD 8400CC gives you a great tool to protect you, your business, and the information with which you are entrusted.

The FD 8400CC is also one of the easiest to maintain shredders that we have found. A lot of people aren't aware that a shredder's blades need to be oiled periodically to ensure peak function, but the FD 8400CC's control panel has a special indicator which flashes when the cutting heads are in need of lubrication (the process can be made even easier with the purchase of Formax's automatic oiling system) Another way to keep the blades in great shape is to utilize the FD 8400CC's automatic cleaning system that runs the heads in reverse to clear them of paper particles that have collected over time. Perhaps most remarkable of all, however, is the self-diagnosing system that records the details of your usage patterns and can relay them to technicians to assist them during service calls.

The cutting heads of the FD 8400CC are solid steel and are under manufacturer's warranty for the life of the shredder.

Weaknesses:

Though the FD 8400CC works hard, it may not be rated for continuous use. The machine has what is called "thermal overload protection," which is a handy function, but all it means it that the machine will shut itself off when there is a danger of overheating. We ran into no problems during our testing. However, high volume users may want to choose a shredder with a continuous duty motor.
